ROSEVILLE, Minn. – March 26, 2012 – AbleNet, an industry leader in developing, manufacturing and distributing assistive technology devices for those with disabilities has seen an industry shift over the past year. Consumer electronics such as Apple’s iPad, iPod or iPhone, are being used more and as assistive technology solutions in the classroom, around the community and at home. Increasingly, parents see iDevices as lower-cost alternatives to some of the dedicated assistive technology on the market and schools are adopting iDevices to enhance learning in the classroom. In addition, Apple has taken the initiative to build some accessibility features such as assistive touch and voice over into its iOS 5. However, individuals with moderate to sever disabilities often need alternative means of access to use a touch screen device along with software that provides more sophisticated access options, which are not readily available at your local Apple store.
AbleNet is building on the work of Apple and delivering necessary tools for individuals with more significant disabilities to have access to iDevices. Over the past year AbleNet launched the Blue2TM Bluetooth® switch, which provides switch access to the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and gives users access to a variety of switch accessible apps that are on the market, including AbleNet’s SoundingBoardTM AAC app. AbleNet also offers HookTM, which gives users switch access to their music library on an iPod Touch, iPod Nano or iPhone.
